Paying for Fraternities & Sororities

Paying fraternity and sorority dues

A few expenses you should consider before joining a fraternity or sorority include:

  • Pledge and initiation fees:  These are one-time fees that are paid when you join.  These fees vary from house to house.
  • Dues: Dues typically cover your membership fee, activities, administrative staff, and other chapter expenses. Dues vary from house to house and typically range from $200 to $1,500 per year.
  • Social events: Greek social events range from costume parties to formal events. The costs for drinks, dinner, outfits, photos, transportation, and favors can quickly add up.
  • Philanthropy: Most Greek organizations have a charity they support each year. Members can be expected to make financial donations as well as volunteer.
  • Living requirements: Members of fraternities and sororities are often given the option to—or are required to-live in the house for at least one year. Fees for living in the house are in addition to the yearly dues, but often cover your meals. You’ll want to compare these expenses with living off-campus and in a residence hall.
  • Miscellaneous expenses: T-shirts, sweatshirts, and jewelry with your Greek letters are very popular and cost money.

Expenses differ from chapter to chapter. If you are thinking of joining a fraternity or sorority, talk to members to find out what they typically spend each year.  During formal recruitment, each chapter may provide you with a detailed statement of its member's financial obligations.
