Preventing Identity Theft

Understanding identity theft

Identity theft might seem incomprehensible on a personal level, but as a criminal, financial, and legal matter it is a widespread problem of the digital age. If someone steals your identity, they may spend your money, wreak havoc on your credit, and commit crimes in your name.

Identity theft is a federal crime that occurs when one person's identification (which can include your name, Social Security number, or any account number) is used or transferred by another person for unlawful activities. Visit the Federal Trade Commission to find out more about identity theft.
