Finding help with a gambling problem

The following organizations can help with gambling problems:

  • Gamblers Anonymous: 12-step program for problem gamblers. 888-424-3577.
  • Gam-Anon: This organization is for wives, husbands, partners, relatives, or close friends of a problem gambler. Local groups exist in most cities. 718-352-1671.
  • National Council on Problem Gambling: A nonprofit health agency that provides information on problem gambling and promotes the development of services for the disorder. Their 24-hour confidential helpline is 800-522-4700.

If you think a friend has a gambling problem:

  • Look for signs of a problem.
  • Share your concerns with your friend.
  • Consider talking to a teacher, coach, or counselor who can help you determine if more intervention might be helpful.
  • Do not lend money to people you are concerned have a gambling problem.
