Often times, an internship with a good company, doing the type of work you'd like to do, is a wonderful opportunity to not only to find out what a company is like but also to get your foot in the door to a full-time, permanent position. Many companies have formal internship programs that prepare you for positions within the company.
To find internships, first visit the company's Web site. The "careers" or "opportunities" pages often have their internships listed, though they also might be categorized as a job type in their job search engine. Also, be sure to contact the human resources department of the company to inquire about opportunities that might not be listed on the Web site.
Networking is a great way to find internships at companies that interest you. Tap into your friends, family, and alumni to find internship opportunities.
Some internships will not pay you, or may pay just a token amount. Even so, internships can be valuable for the experience you'll gain, the skills you'll hone, the referrals you'll acquire, and the possibility of landing a permanent position within the company. Be a little wary of internships that sound more like filing, mail room, or purely administrative work. While such jobs are important, you want to be working toward a position that uses your education and knowledge, not just whiling away the hours in a completely unrelated task.
