What to expect in your first job

Congratulations! You got that great new job! Here's what to expect as you begin your new job.

First day and first week

  • Go through orientation, if your company offers it.
  • Fill out forms for taxes, insurance, retirement plan, and other payroll deductions. Some employers may provide you with a packet of information and forms to fill out at home. Bring them back the next day.
  • Obtain a copy of the employee handbook and make sure to review it. This where you will find information about vacation days, health benefits and company policies.
  • Meet with your supervisor to review expectations and receive your first assignment.
  • Introduce yourself to co-workers.
  • Arrange your desk or work space.
  • Be sure your computer is set up with your employee login information.

First month

  • Read your employee handbook and note if you have questions to ask of human resources or your manager.
  • Start to perform the duties of your position.
  • Learn the job's "culture." Any employer has unwritten rules of procedure and behavior that you'll pick up as a new employee. Be aware of these unspoken expectations.
  • Observe, listen, and learn. Ask questions when you're not clear about something.
  • Find a mentor (an experienced co-worker) who can "show you the ropes" of the company and your position.
  • Visit the personnel or human resources office if you don't understand some of the benefits, policies, or procedures.
